Thomas Jefferson Quotes

Thomas Jefferson left a profound mark on America and her constitution. Jefferson was a deep thinker who contemplated many areas of social, religious and political importance. It is clear from his thoughts that Jefferson was an independently minded thinker who took nothing for granted and sought to seek the truth, devoid of intolerance, bigotry and prejudice.

"Honesty is the first chapter of the book of wisdom."

Thomas Jefferson

" I do not believe war the most certain means of enforcing principles. Those peaceable coercions which are in the power of every nation, if undertaken in concert and in time of peace, are more likely to produce the desired effect."

"I cannot live without books."

Thomas Jefferson

"I do not take a single newspaper, nor read one a month, and I feel myself infinitely the happier for it."

Richard Branson Prize for Reducing Green House Warming

Richard Branson has recently announced the $25m Virgin Earth Challenge. This a scheme to reward anybody who can make a signficant contribution to reducing global warming that is both cost effective and also enables us to keep flying (including on Virgin Planes) To win the prize the participant must be able to prove that they are able to make a significant contribution to the removal of greenhouse gasses which will last for up to 1000 years.

It is a shrewed move with many environmentalists correctly pointing to aircraft emissions as being one of the worst pollutants in terms of CO2 gasses.

It is worth noting that Virgin as of yet do not match BA in their carbon offsetting schemes.

Virgin's current contribution to reducing greenhouse gasses from its flights includes, amongst other things, removing empty champagne bottles from the flight before take off (reducing weight saves fuel)

His initiative received enthusiastic support from former president of America Bill Gates.
